Sangwon Lee, a composer, sound artist and educator, holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Music Composition and Theory, augmented by a cognate field in Sound Design, from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His academic journey commenced with a Master of Music degree in Music Composition from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he graduated with academic honors. Prior to this, Lee completed his Bachelor of Music in Music Composition at Keimyung University in Korea.
Throughout his academic and professional endeavors, Lee has garnered significant acclaim, receiving accolades such as recognition from esteemed competitions like the Destellos Electroacoustic Music Composition Competition in Argentina, the Ars Electronica Forum Wallis Selection in Switzerland, the 2 Agosto Composition Competition in Italy, the Frederic Mompou Award in Spain, the JURGENSON Composition Competition in Russia, the American Prize in the USA and Luigi Russolo Award in France. His compositions have graced renowned events worldwide, including the San Francisco Tape Music Festival, MA/IN Festival, Atemporanea Festival, New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival, and SEAMUS conference, among others.
Born in South Korea, Lee’s musical prowess has traversed borders, with his works being performed and broadcast across a multitude of countries, including Canada, France, Italy, Spain, Japan, Belgium, Switzerland, Mexico, Brazil, England, USA, and his homeland, South Korea. Lee has also contributed to the realm of education, sharing his expertise in Electronic Music and Composition as a faculty member at Busan National University in Korea.
